Game Breeding

Shikwaru Lodge is home to more than 30 species of mammals including: giraffe, zebra, kudu, warthog, gemsbok, blue wildebeest, and leopard. Scarce species like nyala and sable antelope are currently part of our breeding projects.

Buffalo Breeding Programme

The principle objective of the Buffalo Breeding Programme is to breed disease free buffalo for re-sale as breeding stock and the excess bulls for trophy hunting purposes.

The Sable Antelope Breeding Programme

This project runs in a separate camp of 50 hectares. The camp is close to the main camp/office area and easily accessible for maintenance and management. The camp has a 2.4m electrified fence. A breeding herd of 7 females, with one young breeding bull, are established. All 7 females have reproduced once allready and some twice already.

A sable cow gestates for about 8 months, and in a breeding herd where their condition can be kept optimal, they can give birth every 10 months.

Nyala Breeding Programme

A Nyala herd of 22 females and 2 bulls have been released in a 70 hectares breeding camp. The herd size will be built up until we reach full capacity on the number of animals. All the excess animals will be relocated on the farm to the bigger area.

Some of the animals will be available for selling. Nyala can give three single lambs in a three year period. All excess animals will be sold when the farm reach the stage when the project runs at full capacity and the profits will be used to reach specific projects with children in South Africa through the Reaching a Generation (RaG) organization.

Black Impala

We've also introduced a black impala ram with a herd of females in an isolated area during 2009 to establish a breeding herd of black impala. All excess animals will also be up for sale to support the RaG organisation.
